History

Founded in 1970 and formally chartered 1972, the Black Education Association was formed to provide a basic support system for addressing issues related to African-American faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University. In 2018 the BEA enriched its experience by including staff among its ranks. Current and past initiatives supported and promoted by the BEA include:

  • Research symposia
  • Professional development workshops on promotion and tenure
  • Faculty recruitment, retention and development programs
  • The FAME program for junior faculty
  • The Black Research Institute
  • Faculty Fellow Program
  • African-American Male Initiative
